Many of us love to hate adversity, and it’s easy to see why—it often brings loss, pain, and discomfort. But what if adversity is actually a blessing in disguise? My recent research suggests exactly that.

When we cultivate spirituality—a personal, secure relationship with a loving God—we unlock a powerful tool for transforming hardship into growth. Spirituality not only helps reduce stress but also allows us to see adversity as a pathway to greater resilience and fulfilment.

Our recent study “Positive Role of Adversity and Suffering in The Relationship Between Spirituality and Flourishing” revealed that highly spiritual individuals often flourish even in the midst of intense stress. Their faith reframes challenges, turning pain into purpose and struggles into stepping stones. This supports what I call Differential Bliss Receptibility (DBR) theory, which suggests that adversity can heighten our sensitivity to life’s deeper meanings, guiding us toward profound growth and bliss.

Adversity, then, is not merely something to endure—it’s an opportunity to discover the strength, wisdom, and peace that lie within us. With the right perspective, even our toughest moments can lead to a life of deeper flourishing (Read the entire study here).
